19th ranked woman headlines players for Memphis Classic
Ekatarina Alexandrova, ranked 19th in the world, headlines the list of names coming to play in the Memphis Classic, a new WTA 250 tournament, July 25-Aug. 2, at Leftwich Tennis Center.
Australian Maya Joint, a 20-year-old ranked 87th in the world, is also part of the main draw for the Memphis Classic. Joint is in the news Tuesday, as she plays Serena Williams on Centre Court at Wimbledon, as Williams makes her return to tennis.
Main draw players Alexandrova, Alycia Parks and McCartney Kessler all won their first-round matches Monday at Wimbledon. Kessler is playing world No. 1 and Wimbledon top seed Aryna Sabalenka on Wednesday.
The WTA has three tiers of tournaments. The 250-level is the entry-level tour event. The 500-level is the mid-level and the 1000s are the bigger tournaments.
The last WTA event was held in Memphis at the Racquet Club in 2013. The Club closed in the spring of 2019.
The new Leftwich Tennis Center reopened on Nov. 11, 2023. The joint venture by the city, the University of Memphis and Tennis Memphis has 24 outdoor and 12 indoor tennis courts.
